As global trade continues to deepen, the international cooperation in the cosmetics industry has become increasingly frequent, raising higher requirements for the seal testing standards of cosmetic packaging. Recently, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) have jointly released new international standards for the seal testing of cosmetic packaging, aiming to unify testing methods worldwide and ensure the quality and safety of cosmetic packaging.

The new standards cover various aspects of cosmetic packaging materials, including material characteristics, physical properties, chemical properties, and durability, with a particular emphasis on the barrier properties, headspace gas analysis, and seal integrity testing of packaging materials. These tests are crucial for ensuring the stability of cosmetics during storage and transportation, as well as for safeguarding consumer use.

According to the new standards, the steps for the seal testing of cosmetic packaging are as follows:

1. Sample preparation: Select bottles or tubes that match the caps, pumps, and spray heads, and fill them with an appropriate amount of water or simulated product.

2. Seal testing: After tightening the caps, pumps, and spray heads with the water or simulated product filled, conduct the following tests:

   a. Invert and place for 24 hours at room temperature, then check.

   b. Invert and squeeze the bottle or tube with force for one minute, then check.

   c. Use a seal testing instrument to test under a negative pressure of 0.04MPa-0.06MPa for one to five minutes.

3. Bottle mouth integrity check: Ensure that the bottle mouth is free from damage and the sealing ring is not deformed.

4. Compatibility and gap deviation test: Check the compatibility of the bottle cap with the bottle body to ensure there is no looseness or overtightening.

5. Special packaging material testing: For oily or aqueous products, use narrow-mouth bottles equipped with appropriate pumps or caps to enhance seal integrity.

The introduction of the new standards not only helps to improve the overall quality of cosmetic packaging but also serves as an important safeguard for consumer health and safety. Strict seal testing can effectively prevent product leakage during transportation and storage, ensuring product stability and extending shelf life.
