Essential oils, plant-derived facial oils and anhydrous serum oils have witnessed rapid growth in the global skincare market. Unlike conventional water-based skincare products, essential oils contain terpene, ester and other active solvent components, which may trigger swelling, permeation and precipitation reactions with various packaging materials. Industry experts warn that packaging containers for essential oil products should not be selected merely based on appearance. Three core factors — material compatibility, light resistance and sealing structure — directly determine the shelf stability of essential oil products and serve as key compliance considerations for cross-border brands expanding overseas.

Pure essential oils, citrus essential oils and high-concentration plant skincare oils contain strongly soluble terpene molecules. Such components can gradually erode ordinary plastics including PET, PS and PVC. Under long-term storage or high-temperature conditions during sea transportation, issues such as container softening, microcracks, discoloration and off-odour of contents may occur. Worse still, small plastic molecules may migrate into the oil phase, creating safety hazards that affect finished-product registration and end-user safety.

In terms of material selection, glass is the preferred container for pure essential oils. Featuring high chemical inertness, glass will not react with essential oil components. Amber or deep blue light-shielding glass blocks ultraviolet rays to slow essential oil oxidation and rancidification while preserving fragrance and actives, making it the mainstream solution for premium aromatherapy oils and facial serums. Matched with droppers, threaded sealing caps and oil-resistant silicone gaskets, it reduces essential oil volatilization and locks in aroma.

For blended skincare oils with diluted or low concentrations of essential oils, HDPE (high-density polyethylene) and PP (polypropylene) containers may be adopted with caution. Even if these plastics are chosen, long-term compatibility tests and high-low temperature cycle tests must be completed before mass production. Ordinary transparent PET containers are not suitable for high-concentration essential oil formulations. While filling may look fine in the short term, packaging failure is highly likely during prolonged storage and high heat inside ocean freight containers.

Apart from bottle materials, accessories including inner stoppers, pump heads and gaskets cannot be overlooked. Conventional rubber and low-density PE seals tend to swell and deform upon contact with essential oils and cause leakage. Oil-resistant silicone or fluorine rubber gaskets are required for essential oil products. Brands often overlook tiny parts such as dropper tips, pump cores and springs. Incompatibility of these components with essential oils can also lead to deterioration of the product content.

Sealing design represents another key requirement for essential oil packaging. Essential oils are highly volatile. Insufficient airtightness leads to aroma loss and attenuation of active ingredients, which directly hurts consumer experience. Multiple options such as dropper bottles, roll-on bottles and screw-cap sealed bottles are available for different application scenarios. Meanwhile, an increasing number of overseas brands adopt PCR recycled glass while ensuring product stability to balance product safety and sustainability requirements under the EU PPWR packaging regulation.

The Technical Lead at Rose Pack commented that many essential oil skincare brands prioritize bottle aesthetics during new product development yet ignore the special corrosive properties of essential oils towards packaging materials. They only discover leakage and odour problems after filling, resulting in costly rework losses. “Packaging selection for essential oil formulations should take place at the early R&D stage. Based on our clients’ essential oil concentration, presence of citrus terpenes, pH value as well as storage and transport conditions, we recommend suitable materials and sealing accessories and assist clients with compatibility assessments to avoid quality failures at later stages.”

As demand for natural essential oil skincare rises across Europe, America and Southeast Asia, overseas regulators keep tightening testing requirements for migration from cosmetic packaging. For export-focused brands, packaging compatibility reports and material safety statements have become mandatory documents for customs clearance and product registration. Industry trends indicate that essential oil skincare is shifting from simple “natural marketing” towards full supply-chain quality control. Packaging suppliers are no longer mere container manufacturers, but collaborative R&D partners ensuring formulation stability.

Industry experts add that no universal packaging material exists. Citrus essential oils, floral essential oils and diluted blended oils differ greatly in tolerance to packaging materials. Whether glass or plastic is used, sample compatibility testing is mandatory before formal mass production — this is the most critical step to mitigate risks. Moving forward, essential oil-specific packaging combining oil resistance, stability and recyclable mono-material design will become a major development trend within the natural skincare sector.
